Greeted by our representative at Colombo Airport and depart to Colombo. Colombo: the commercial hub of Sri Lanka, also a destination in its own right with colonial architecture, bazaar streets and Buddhist monasteries, framed by polished hotels and oceanfront restaurants. Breakfast at the hotel, then a city tour. Gangaramaya Temple: 150 years of history, a library and relic repository, with gilded ornaments donated by devotees; the annual Navam Perahera in February is the city's most vibrant procession. National Museum: built in 1877 by Sir William Henry Gregory, home to swords, muskets, paintings, ceremonial demon masks and the royal throne of the Kandyan kings. Dutch Period Museum: Dutch-era furniture, headstones and ceramics, housed in the former residence of the 17th-century Dutch governor. Fort Area & Railway Station: narrow lanes packed with stalls -- a bazaar district unlike anywhere else on the island. Overnight stay at Colombo.

Colombo / Dambulla

Breakfast then transfer to Colombo Airport to board a Cinnamon Air flight to Sigiriya, followed by a visit to Dambulla Golden Cave Temple. Dambulla Golden Cave Temples: a moderate 2-hour climb rewarded by a 30m Buddha statue in the Dhamma Chakka posture; the complex dates to the 1st century BC across five cave shrines with well-preserved paintings. Overnight stay at Dambulla.

Dambulla / Sigiriya

Breakfast then depart for Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Sigiriya: a 200m rock fortress with a royal palace at its summit, 1,200 steps and about 3 hours round trip, with fifth-century frescoes and the famous mirror wall graffiti. Village Safari: a rural interlude with a bullock cart ride, canoe trip and tuk-tuk through village paths, including a village-style lunch and views of local crops and cultivation. Overnight stay at Dambulla.

Dambulla / Polonnaruwa / Dambulla

After breakfast, a hot air ballooning tour. Hot Air Ballooning: drifting above the Golden Cave Temples, Kandalama Reservoir and Sigiriya Rock, a seasonal favourite from November to April when winds are calm and skies clear. Polonnaruwa: a World Heritage Site of Buddha statues, ancient complexes and Hindu sculptures shaped in part by Indian influence, with irrigation fed by the Parakrama Samudra; flat terrain, about 2.5 hours. Overnight stay at Dambulla.

After breakfast depart to Kandy, the last royal capital. Kandy Tooth Temple: home to the sacred left canine relic of the Buddha, an easy 2-hour visit. Folk Show: an hour of 12 traditional dances and a fire-walking ceremony. Overnight stay at Kandy.

Kandy / Nuwara Eliya

Breakfast then depart for Nuwara Eliya, passing scenic landscapes, waterfalls and a working tea factory and estate. City tour: Golf Course, Race Course, Gregory Lake and Victoria Park as preferred. Seetha Amman Temple: the world's only Seetha temple, at the spot legend holds Seetha was held captive by Ravana. Hakgala Botanical Gardens: established 1861, originally for cinchona cultivation, later transformed into ornamental gardens known for orchids and roses. Overnight stay at Nuwara Eliya.

Early morning visit to Horton Plains National Park. A 5am jeep transfer precedes a 3-hour, 9.5km trek past World's End (Small and Big), Baker's Falls and Chimney Pool. Overnight stay at Mirissa.

Breakfast then a day of coastal activities. Whale Watching: possible year-round, peak November-April, with blue, Bryde's, sperm and occasionally killer whales plus several dolphin species; boats depart around 7am for roughly 4 hours.
