Overview
Ella is a small hill-country town in the Badulla District, threaded along a ridge at around 1,000 metres and framed by tea-covered hills, waterfalls, and the dramatic Ella Gap. It has grown from a quiet stop on the scenic hill-country railway into one of Sri Lanka's most popular travel hubs, built around a cluster of easy, rewarding hikes and the much-photographed Nine Arch Bridge, where the old colonial-era railway still crosses on a curving stone viaduct. Cafes, guesthouses, and viewpoints line the short main road, and the town makes an easy, laid-back base for a day or two in the hills.

Trails can be muddy and slippery after rain, so proper footwear is worth packing even for the shorter walks.
