Overview

About Mirissa

Mirissa is a laid-back south-coast beach town in the Matara District, known equally for its crescent of golden sand backed by palm trees and for being one of the best places in Asia to see blue whales in the wild. Its sheltered bay and gently curving beach draw a relaxed mix of surfers, sunbathers, and travellers passing through between Galle and Yala, with a small harbour that doubles as the departure point for whale-watching boats heading into deep water just offshore. By day the beach is easy and unhurried; by evening its beachfront restaurants and bars fill up for sunset.

Why visit Mirissa

  • Join an early-morning boat to look for blue whales and dolphins
  • Relax on Mirissa's palm-lined crescent beach
  • Watch the sunset from Coconut Tree Hill
  • Learn to surf on Mirissa's gentle beach breaks
  • Climb Parrot Rock at the beach's eastern end
  • Wind down at a beachfront bar or restaurant after dark

Things to know before you go

Whale-watching boats typically depart around 6:30-7am, and while sightings aren't guaranteed, the peak season from December to April offers the best chance of seeing blue whales; seasickness tablets are worth taking, as waters can get choppy. The beach itself is compact but rarely crowded, and Coconut Tree Hill just east of the harbour is the go-to sunset spot, best reached shortly before dusk. Mirissa makes an easy stop between Galle and points further along the south coast or inland toward Yala.
