Overview
Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka's premier surf town, a laid-back stretch of the east coast in the Ampara District built almost entirely around its famous right-hand point break. Once a sleepy fishing village, it has grown into an international surf destination without losing much of its relaxed, low-key character, with a single main road lined with surf shops, cafes, and guesthouses running behind the beach. Its surf season runs opposite the island's west and south coasts, drawing surfers from around the world between April and October when the swell and offshore winds line up.

Things to Know Before You Go
Arugam Bay's surf season runs from April to October, opposite the west and south coasts, so it fills up with surfers exactly when much of the rest of the island is quieter for beach travel. Main Point is the famous break but can get crowded during peak months, and several quieter alternatives, Peanut Farm, Whiskey Point, and Elephant Rock, are worth exploring within a short ride. Outside of surf season, from November to March, the town winds down considerably and many businesses close, so this isn't the time to plan a visit around Arugam Bay specifically.
