Day-by-Day Itinerary
Airport / Pinnawala / Dambulla
Pick up from Colombo Airport and depart for Dambulla, visiting Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage en route (74km from the airport). Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage: gates open 8.30am on a 25-acre property; each elephant receives about 76kg of greens plus a rice-and-maize mix daily. Founded in 1975, home to roughly 90 elephants (39 male, 51 female), caring for animals orphaned by farmer conflict or accidental falls. Daily schedule: 8.30 opening, bottle feeding 9.15/13.15/17.00, river bathing 10.00 & 14.00, closing 17.30-18.00. Dambulla Golden Cave Temples: a moderate 2-hour climb to a 30m Buddha statue in the Dhamma Chakka posture, across five 1st-century-BC cave shrines. Overnight stay at Dambulla.

Dambulla / Polonnaruwa / Sigiriya
After breakfast, visit Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya before returning to Dambulla. Polonnaruwa Historical Site Cycle Tour: a World Heritage Site of Buddha statues, palace complexes and Hindu sculptures shaped by Indian influence, with irrigation fed by the Parakrama Samudra; flat terrain, about 2.5 hours. Sigiriya: a 200m rock fortress with a royal palace at its summit, 1,200 steps, fifth-century frescoes and the mirror wall graffiti. Village Safari: a bullock cart ride, canoe trip and tuk-tuk through village paths with a local-style lunch. Overnight stay at Dambulla.

Dambulla / Kandy
After breakfast depart to Kandy, the last royal capital. Hot Air Ballooning: a seasonal (November-April) flight above the Golden Cave Temples, Kandalama Reservoir and Sigiriya Rock. Kandy Tooth Temple: home to the sacred left canine relic of the Buddha, an easy 2-hour visit. Folk Show: an hour of 12 traditional dances and a fire-walking ceremony. Overnight stay at Kandy.

Kandy / Kitulgala
Breakfast then depart for Kitulgala, passing scenic landscapes and a working tea factory and estate. White Water Rafting: Kitulgala's Kelani River and boulders create Grade 3/4 rapids; the route passes the filming location of The Bridge on the River Kwai before finishing near Kitulgala Rest House. Overnight stay at Kitulgala.

Kitulgala / Sinharaja Rain Forest
Breakfast then depart for Sinharaja Rain Forest. Sinharaja Rain Forest: wet-zone terrain often wrapped in mist, declared a World Heritage Site in 1989, bordered by the Koskulana River and Gin Ganga, with flora, wildlife and birdlife largely endemic to Sri Lanka. Overnight stay near Sinharaja Rain Forest.

Sinharaja Rain Forest / Udawalawe National Park
After breakfast depart for Udawalawe, with an evening Half Day Game Safari. Udawalawe National Park: sustained by the Udawalawe Reservoir, home to elephants, wild buffalo, sambar deer, crocodiles, sloth bear, jackals and leopards; sparser vegetation than other parks allows clearer sightings. Overnight stay at Udawalawe.

Mirissa / Galle
Early morning whale watching safari. Doable year-round, peak season November-April, with blue, Bryde's, sperm and occasionally killer whales plus several dolphin species; boats depart around 7am for roughly 4 hours. Galle Fort: built in the 17th century, one of the best-preserved forts in South Asia, with colonial villas, the Dutch Reformed Church, a museum and the Clock Tower. Overnight stay at Galle.

Galle / Bentota
Breakfast then depart for Bentota. Moonstone Mines: near Ambalangoda in Meetiyagoda, the country's only concentrated moonstone deposit, with narrow mining shafts open to visitors. Ambalangoda Mask Museum: traditional hand-carved masks tracing centuries of craft and cultural significance. Island Hopping on the Madu River: a lagoon of hundreds of islets in southwest Balapitiya, with an old Buddhist monastery and local cinnamon cultivation and prawn fishing (about 2 hours). Turtle Hatchery: begun in 1988, incubating purchased turtle eggs for roughly 50 days before releasing hatchlings to the sea at night. Overnight stay at Bentota.
