Overview

About Yala National Park

Yala National Park spans the dry southeastern coast across the Hambantota and Monaragala Districts, and is Sri Lanka's most visited national park thanks to one of the highest densities of leopards found anywhere in the world. Beyond leopards, its mix of scrub jungle, lagoons, and grassland shelters elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and more than 200 recorded bird species, with the ruins of ancient reservoirs and a coastal Buddhist shrine adding historical layers to the landscape. Most safaris run from Block I, the park's original and most productive section, in open 4×4 jeeps departing before sunrise or in the late afternoon.

Things to know before you go

Game drives typically run in the cooler early morning and late afternoon hours, when animals are most active and the heat is more bearable in an open jeep. Block I is the most reliable area for leopard sightings but also the busiest, so an experienced local guide and driver make a real difference in both sightings and route choice. The park closes for around a month each year, usually between September and mid-October, for annual maintenance, so it is worth checking dates before booking a trip built around Yala.
