Overview
Minneriya National Park in the North Central Province is best known for 'The Gathering', one of the largest seasonal congregations of Asian elephants anywhere in the world, when several hundred elephants converge on the grassy banks of the ancient Minneriya reservoir during the dry season. Built around a reservoir constructed by King Mahasena in the 3rd century CE, the park's mix of grassland, scrub, and forest also supports sambar deer, water buffalo, and abundant birdlife, but it's the sheer scale of the elephant herds that draws visitors, particularly between July and October when water elsewhere becomes scarce.

Things to Know Before You Go
The Gathering peaks between August and September as the dry season shrinks water sources elsewhere, drawing elephants from surrounding forests to the reservoir's grassy edges in numbers rarely seen elsewhere in Asia. Safaris typically run in the late afternoon, from around 2:30pm to 6pm, when elephants move out of the forest to graze and drink as the day cools. Minneriya sits conveniently close to both Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, making it easy to combine a safari with a day of cultural sightseeing.
