The Dambulla Cave Temple is Sri Lanka's largest and best-preserved cave temple complex, carved into a 160-metre granite outcrop in the Matale District and revered as a place of Buddhist worship for more than 2,000 years. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, it houses five interconnected caves containing over 150 Buddha statues alongside intricately painted ceilings and walls depicting the life of the Buddha across roughly 2,100 square metres of murals. A steep but short climb leads up to the cave entrance, rewarded along the way by sweeping views over the surrounding plains and, on clear days, a distant glimpse of Sigiriya rock.
