Anuradhapura's sites are spread across a large forested area, so hiring a bicycle, tuk-tuk, or driver for the day makes far more sense than trying to walk between them. Many of the sacred areas, particularly around the Bodhi tree and main dagobas, require shoulders and knees covered and shoes removed, so sturdy sandals that slip on and off easily are worth packing. The dry north-central climate means it's hot year-round, so an early start and plenty of water are essential regardless of season.
