Overview
Pidurangala Rock rises just north of Sigiriya in the Matale District, a slightly taller and far less crowded climb that rewards visitors with the classic postcard view of Sigiriya's fortress across the plain, especially at sunrise. Once home to a cave monastery relocated here by King Kasyapa when he built his palace on Sigiriya, the site still holds an active Buddhist temple and a large reclining Buddha statue partway up the trail. The final scramble to the summit is steeper and rockier than Sigiriya's stairways, but with a fraction of the visitors and none of the ticket queues.

Things to Know Before You Go
The final stretch to Pidurangala's summit involves scrambling over loose rock and boulders without handrails, so sturdy shoes and a head for heights help; it's noticeably rougher going than Sigiriya's built staircases. Arriving in the dark for sunrise means climbing with a torch or headlamp, and it's worth allowing about 45 minutes to reach the top before first light. Many visitors combine a Pidurangala sunrise with Sigiriya later the same morning, since the two sites sit only about a kilometre apart.
