Pidurangala Rock rises just north of Sigiriya in the Matale District, a slightly taller and far less crowded climb that rewards visitors with the classic postcard view of Sigiriya's fortress across the plain, especially at sunrise. Once home to a cave monastery relocated here by King Kasyapa when he built his palace on Sigiriya, the site still holds an active Buddhist temple and a large reclining Buddha statue partway up the trail. The final scramble to the summit is steeper and rockier than Sigiriya's stairways, but with a fraction of the visitors and none of the ticket queues.
